The Importance of Being Earnest

Oscar Wilde, 1895
Jack and Algy claim
to be "Earnest" and things get
quickly out of hand

Such a funny play, and a great film adaptation, as well! Wilde literally spends the entire play mocking the society of the time. Social standards are poked at, and frivolous class biases are made to look as ridiculous as they are. It's totally superficial, and mostly just silly.

The film version has an all-star cast including Dame Judi Dench (Hollywood's token haughty British woman), Colin Firth, and Tom Wilkinson. The story's focus is on two young couples, but the older couple steals the show everytime. Dr. Chasuble and Miss Prism are the most awkwardly creepy characters ever. (PG)
