The Virgin Suicides

Jeffrey Eugenides, 1993
In suburbia
the lives of one family
are not what they seem

In college, my roommate, Brett, told me that I should read this book. Looking back, I realize that I was probably the only one of her roommates that could get past the title. (I will admit to feelings of sadness and angst after reading this.)

Eugenides debut novel tells the story of the five Lisbon sisters, growing up in a cookie-cutter neighborhood with their emotionally stifling parents. Haunting and absorbing; almost voyeuristic in its approach, you feel you can almost understand their motives. Almost. (R)
